25DRIVINGchangeANNUALREPORTFY2013BONSECOURSHEALTHSYSTEMModelandAdvocateSocialJusticeSupportingcomprehensiveimmigrationreormandsaeguardingtheAfordableCareActweretwocentralissuesoBonSecoursHealthSystemsadvocacyactivitiesinFY2013.BonSecoursalsosupportedinitiativespromotingagreenercleanerenvironment.ThehealthsystemalsoteamedupwiththeCatholicHealthAssociationingrassrootsefortstourgelawmakerstocratmeaningulnationallegislationtoopposegunviolenceandtoeliminatethescourgeohumantrackingandhelpthevictimsinitswake.TargetedadvocacyefortsatBonSecoursBaltimorestrengthenedsupportservicesandprogramsoramiliesthroughexpandedchildcareworkorcedevelopmentandeducationandtraining.OnesignicantoutcomeromthisworkisthecreationoaHealthEnterpriseZonewitha5milliongrantromtheStateoMarylandtosupportpopulation-basedhealthprogramsandoutreach.DiversityandInclusionBonSecoursHealthSystemhasmadepositiveachievementsinbuildingadiverseandinclusiveplacetowork.Asthepopulationcontinuestobecomemoreheterogeneousthereismoreocusonthebenetsoadiverseandinclusiveworkorcethanever.Thesystemsrstthree-yearDiversityandInclusionplanFY2010-2012resultedinnumerousaccomplishments.AmongotherhighlightsBonSecourswasnationallyrecognizedbytheHumanRightsCampaignsHealthcareEqualityIndexasaLeaderinLesbianGayBisexualandTransgenderHealthcareEquality.Thehealthsystemalsobeganocusingonthehiringoveteransespeciallydisabledveteransandspousesoveterans.Overaten-monthperiod151veteranswerehired.Overathree-yearperiod42percentoadministrativeresidentsandellowshiredwereminoritystudentswhichhelpsstrengthenthepipelineordiversehealthcareleaders.In2013alllocalsystemsadoptedSchoolatWorkacareer-ladderdevelopmentprogramorentry-levelemployeeswhichespeciallybenetsminorities.ShareholderAdvocacyBonSecoursHealthSystemrepresentativescontinuetoworkwithmembersotheInteraithCenteronCorporateResponsibilityICCRtoengagecorporationsindialoguesonhealthreormintheUnitedStatesandaccesstomedicationsordevelopingnations.Dialogueswereconductedwithpharmaceuticalcorporationsencouraginggreateraccesstolie-savingmedicinesinlow-incomecountries.InFY2013healthsystemrepresentativestookamoreactiveroleincorporateengagementonthetopicsonutritionandwaterconservation.InadditionthehealthsystemassistedinsponsorshipotheICCRWaterConerenceorcorporateandnon-governmentorganizationleadersandcontinuestalkswithSouthernCompanyanelectricpowerandutilitycompanyonwateruseandrecyclinginpowergeneration.
